Every time a thought is put into words, it is a creative act (thus the term, language arts). The same way a student recognizes and is able to practice visual arts by learning images, drawing, painting, and/or sculpting, a person’s language skills expand the more s/he communicates ideas, problems, feelings, and solutions. Diff3r3nt By D3sign (Different By Design) places students in control over their intellectual and artistic development. We at DBD view literacy development as an active process as opposed to a passive acquisition of skills and knowledge. DBD’s Poet Mentors facilitate ‘real’ experiences with writing, reading, speaking, listening, and thinking. We aim to deconstruct dominant narratives in hopes of achieving a more inclusive learning experience. DBD views creativity as an inclusive and innate attribute that all youth possess. Rather than developing a craft, we offer teens the ability to freely explore their voice until their search for identity feels natural.
It is for this very reason that Diff3r3nt by D3sign would like to present you with an opportunity to take part in our next Community Cultivation events. During these events select artists are brought up to Alaska to share, teach and interact with the youth. We feel that this is an opportunity to show the youth a face that is one of their own and that is able to deliver a message of hope, belief, and self empowerment that only one of their own can deliver. We are hoping that you may be interested in helping to sponsor this initiative. Financial support will go towards the goal of making this and any subsequent events low cost if not FREE to the community. We see a synergy and connection that would be of benefit to the city as well as the youth of our community.

Catered Blessings Dessert First is hosting a fundraiser for a local program, Diff3r3nt by D3sign because we believe they are working hard to impact and effect positive change in the lives of the youth in our community. This program has gone into many of the schools, recreation centers and residential treatment centers in our community doing writing workshops, performance poetry, and poetry slams. DBD has done numerous things in the community for the youth and this is an opportunity Catered Blessings’ Dessert First wanted to be a part of.
